By Osita Biose
Born on February 23, 1965 in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Godwin Elumelu is a renowned Nigerian politician and former Minority Leader of the Federal House of Representatives. He represented the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, comprising Aniocha and Oshimili Local Government areas of Delta State, and hails from Onicha Uku in Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.
Elumelu’s educational background is impressive. He got the West African Secondary School Certificate from the Lagos State School of Art and Science (1986) and a National Diploma in Business Administration from Yaba College of Technology (1989), crowning it with a degree in Accounting from the Edo State University, now Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma (1993). He added yet another flavour to his educational laurels with a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the same university in 2000.
Elumelu’s entry into politics began in 2007 when he was elected into the House of Representatives, representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency. He was re-elected in 2011 and 2019, during which he attracted an enduring popularity among his constituents. He was the Chairman of the House Committee on Power (2007-2010) and that of Health (2011-2015). His leadership capacity and commitment to his constituents earned him the position of Minority Leader in the House of Representatives too.
Elumelu’s legislative achievements are noteworthy and too numerous to mention. Of note is his sponsoring several bills and motions that impacted positively on the national economy and the lives of his constituents. His contributions to the investigation on the power sector in 2009 and his role in shaping the National Health System are exemplary.
Elumelu is dedicated to the development and growth of his constituency as can be seen in various projects, including the construction of roads as initiated by him, building of many multipurpose town halls, ICT centres and provision of healthcare facilities across his constituency.
That is not all. Elumelu’s passion to lift as many as possible of his constituents from the valley of penury saw him empowering over 900 constituents, providing them with essential tools and equipment to improve their livelihoods.
Although, Elumelu narrowly lost the 2023 House of Representatives Election to Ngozi Okolie of the Labour Party, who later defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), his popularity among his constituents remains strong. As the political trend evolves in the state, Elumelu’s leadership quintessential, legislative experience and commitment to his people have continued to single him out as a formidable contender for future elections in the state and beyond, including the 2027 permutations.
Considering his political suasiveness and adopting the state governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, as his political pride by following him to join the APC; thereby, strengthening the structure of the party ahead 2027, coupled with his leadership capacity and visible commitment to serve his people in his overall passion to continue to uplift humanity, the coast, no doubt, is becoming clearer for him ahead 2027.
