Electoral Hitches In Nigeria And The Fate Of Citizenry
Nigerian electoral process has been plagued by numerous challenges, undermining the very fabric of Democracy in the country. A closer examination reveals a system in crisis.
The Judiciary, once a bastion of hope, has become a decisive factor in determining election outcomes, often contradicting the voters’ choice. This development has sparked widespread disillusionment, with many attributing it to the overriding influence of the Executive over the Judiciary.
The appointment of key electoral officials, such as the INEC chairman, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) by the President, has created a room for bias and suspicion. This perception is further reinforced by the tendency of the Judiciary to determine election outcomes, rather than allowing the voters’ voices to be heard.
Furthermore, the absence of independent candidacy options restricts the democratic space, limiting citizens’ participation in the electoral process. The practice of indirectly embarking on electoral campaigns immediately after elections have been conducted and results of such elections announced is another aberration that undermines electoral processess.
The power of incumbency also poses a significant challenge, as those in office often misuse their positions to influence outcomes of conducts of elections. This, coupled with the lack of transparency in electoral processes, has led to disputes and mistrust.
To address the challenges, Nigeria must prioritize electoral reforms to promote transparency, accountability and fairness. This includes ensuring the independence of electoral institutions, providing a level playing field for all candidates and guaranteeing the independence of the Judiciary.
