Fairness for Teachers, Excellence for All: A Plea to Governor Oborevwori

The ongoing challenges faced by university graduate teachers in Delta State primary schools require attention and action from the government and education stakeholders. It’s notable that NCE holders who upgraded to university degrees in other areas have benefited from career progression, while their counterparts in primary schools have not seen similar advancements. This disparity can be demotivating for the affected teachers, who have invested in upgrading their qualifications.

We appreciate the government’s recognition of teachers as valuable partners in education. However, we urge Governor Oborevwori to consider the specific needs of university graduate teachers in primary schools and extend the positive governance initiatives across Delta State to address their concerns.

The Commissioner for Primary Education can play a key role in resolving this issue by providing the Governor with accurate information on the situation and highlighting the benefits of supporting these teachers. Other states have found solutions to similar challenges, and Delta State can explore these examples.

Two potential options for consideration are:

  1. Career progression: Implementing policies to recognize and reward university graduate teachers in primary schools, aligning with their qualifications and contributions.
  2. Teacher deployment: Exploring opportunities to deploy university graduate teachers to secondary schools, promoting educational continuity and utilizing qualified teachers effectively.

A committee could be established to explore these options and develop a fair solution for university graduate teachers in Delta State primary schools. Addressing this issue would not only support the teachers but also contribute to the overall quality of education in Delta State.

We hope the government will consider these points and take steps to address the concerns of university graduate teachers in primary schools.
