DELTA NORTH 2027: THE CASE FOR RENEWAL

Eagle News Sitrep

The race for the Delta North Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general elections is gathering momentum, with growing conversations across the nine local government areas that make up the district. Although the contest has yet to reach the intensity of a full-blown campaign, political discussions, community engagements and grassroots consultations are increasingly shaping public opinion about the candidates and the direction the district should take.

The contest between former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), presents voters with a choice that goes beyond party platforms. At its heart is the question of whether Delta North should continue with an experienced political figure or embrace a fresh approach to representation at the National Assembly.

Our assessment of the political atmosphere, including reports from door-to-door engagements and grassroots conversations, suggests that Ochei is gaining significant ground. His message of renewal appears to be finding acceptance among voters who want a stronger connection between their representative and the everyday concerns of the people. While the final outcome will depend on the campaign, party organisation and voters’ decisions, the momentum around Ochei deserves serious attention.

Ochei brings considerable political and administrative experience to the contest. His time in the Delta State House of Assembly, including his tenure as Speaker, and his subsequent appointment as an Executive Director at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), provide him with legislative and administrative exposure. His legal and engineering backgrounds, grassroots connections and appeal among supporters seeking political change also form part of his campaign’s attraction.

Beyond personalities and political calculations, the condition of roads and other infrastructure across Delta North remains a major concern. Communities continue to expect more effective representation in addressing the problems affecting their daily lives. The next senator must do more than occupy a seat in Abuja; the office should be used to attract federal attention, pursue development opportunities, raise pressing constituency concerns and maintain regular contact with the people.

Okowa, on his part, is not a political newcomer. His experience as a former senator, governor and vice-presidential candidate gives him an established political network and familiarity with governance at different levels. These are advantages that cannot simply be dismissed. However, experience must be weighed against performance, public confidence and the extent to which previous opportunities to serve have translated into lasting benefits for the district.

The former governor also carries political questions that voters are entitled to examine. Any allegations or controversies surrounding his previous administration should be assessed on the basis of verified information, fairness and due process, rather than political propaganda. His return to the Senate should therefore invite a serious examination of his record, the achievements he can point to and the reasons voters should give him another mandate.

There is equally a broader question about political opportunity and the concentration of elective offices within political families or closely connected circles. Public office should remain open to qualified individuals from different backgrounds, and voters have every right to consider whether their choices promote wider participation and healthy competition. This is not a rejection of experience; it is a reminder that experience should not become an automatic entitlement to continued political power.

In this regard, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s approach to political appointments, particularly his willingness to create opportunities for people beyond the familiar political establishment, offers a useful point of reflection. Leadership is strengthened when opportunities are broadened, capable individuals are recognised and public service is not treated as the exclusive preserve of a few. Delta North’s senatorial contest provides voters with an opportunity to apply the same principle when deciding who should represent them.

Ultimately, the choice belongs to the people of Delta North. Ochei’s growing grassroots appeal and message of renewal have positioned him as a serious contender in the emerging contest. Yet the process must be free, fair and credible, with the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies and all relevant institutions ensuring that voters can express their preferences without intimidation or manipulation. No candidate should be declared the people’s choice before the people have spoken.

What matters most is that Delta North elects a senator who will be accessible, accountable and committed to the district’s development. Renewal is not merely about changing a name; it is about raising expectations, widening opportunity and demanding better representation.
