Delta @ 35: Obieh Calls for Stronger Media-Government Synergy, Commends Oborevwori on Journalists’ Welfare

By Augustine Akanigha

As Delta State commemorates 35 years of its creation, seasoned journalist and labour leader, Comrade Kenneth Obieh, has called for stronger collaboration between the media and the state government as a catalyst for deepening democracy, promoting transparency and accelerating sustainable development across the state.

Obieh made the call on Wednesday in Asaba while reflecting on the significance of Delta State’s 35th anniversary. He also commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for what he described as the administration’s visible commitment to improving the welfare of media practitioners in the state.

According to him, the Oborevwori administration has implemented initiatives that have positively impacted media practitioners, demonstrating recognition of the critical role of the press as the fourth estate in a democratic society.

“We appreciate His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, for the attention given to the welfare of media practitioners in Delta State. It shows that this government recognises the role of the press as the fourth estate of the realm,” Obieh said.

While applauding the administration’s support for the media, Obieh appealed to the state government to create more platforms for regular engagement with the media. He said consistent interaction would foster openness, strengthen public trust and improve accurate reporting of government policies and programmes.
He emphasised that his call was not for confrontation, but for constructive engagement, noting that he believes in persuasion, dialogue and consensus building as effective approaches to strengthening government-media relations. Obieh, who is regarded as a team builder and consensus builder, believes that carrying government and other stakeholders along is more productive than confrontation.

He further urged the government to sustain its transformation agenda by repositioning state-owned media organisations into world-class institutions capable of competing favourably at both national and international levels.

He advised media practitioners to remain professional, objective and patriotic in the discharge of their responsibilities, especially as the 2027 general elections draw nearer. He cautioned against allowing themselves to be used by politicians whose actions may not reflect the best interests of Delta State and its people.

“Delta at 35 is no longer a child. A child who is 35 years old is old enough to be a master of his own,” he said, stressing that professionalism, objectivity and commitment to developmental journalism practice remain critical to preserving the credibility of the media, holding government accountable and promoting an informed and responsible electorate.

He expressed optimism that stronger synergy between the government and the media, anchored on constructive engagement, mutual trust and professionalism, would help consolidate the gains recorded over the past 35 years while positioning Delta State for greater development and progress.

Obieh added that a well-informed media working constructively with an open and responsive government would create a stronger platform for citizens to understand government policies, contribute meaningfully to governance and hold public institutions accountable.

He therefore called for sustained cooperation among government, the media and other stakeholders, stressing that the next phase of Delta State’s development requires collective responsibility, constructive dialogue and a shared commitment to the state’s progress.

Delta State was created on August 27, 1991, from the former Bendel State. The 35th anniversary has provided an opportunity for government, citizens and stakeholders to reflect on the state’s achievements and challenges, while renewing the commitment to building a more prosperous and united Delta State.
